It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Located on the west coast and close to the best wineries and vineyards sits Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay - one of the oldest towns in Uruguay. It was established by the King of Portugal in 1680. The town has gone through multiple wars and since Uruguayan independence and Uruguay regaining control over the city in 1828, the borders have expanded. Despite this expansion, the historic quarter, Barrio Histórico, has retained its original layout and planning as designed by the Portuguese.
In traditional Portuguese design, the streets of Barrio Histórico are set in an irregular pattern, very different from the expansion of the city which was done in the Spanish design of orthogonal street planning which has street intersecting at right angles and lending to a grid-like pattern.

Uruguay has long lived in the shadows of its towering neighbors. It is the second smallest country in South America but has been one of the most stable politically, financially, and has been a leader among South American countries with social legislation. It has an ideal climate with temperatures (in ℉) running from the low 50s to mid 80s on average throughout the year depending on the season. The population is relatively small compared to the total land of the country with the majority centering around Montevideo, the capital, Salto, and Paysandú.
The main language of the country is Spanish however a mix of Spanish and Portuguese called portuñol, can be heard around towns that border Brazil. Like most of South America, fútbol is a national obsession and they have one of the most successful men’s teams in the world with 2 World Cup and Olympic wins, 19 FIFA titles, and 15 Copa América championships.
We have more to come in the next week, but in the meantime, what have you heard about Uruguay and what would you like to learn more about?

Fútbol, football, soccer - whatever name you call it, the sport is a national treasure in Argentina. The men's national team returned to worldwide dominance in 2022 with their third World Cup championship under the leadership of Lionel Messi (previous wins were in 1978 and again in 1986 while being led by Diego Maradona).
If you are visiting Argentina between May and December, this is prime time to catch a game in the Argentine Primera División - Liga Profesional. The 2024 season has 28 teams who will play round robin style - 26 teams from the 2023 season plus 2 teams promoted from the 2023 Primera Nacional.

As much as we love traveling to lesser known places and finding hidden gems that are only known to locals, sometimes you need to experience a major site because it is “wonder” for a reason! And in this case, Iguazú or Iguaçu Falls is that wonder. It is the largest waterfall system in the world with 275 falls spread out over two distinct staired levels. There are entrances on both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides and the falls are only an hour from the border with Paraguay. Most of the Iguazú river flows through Brazil but the majority of the falls lie in Argentina including the ability to get close to the Devil’s Throat - the heart of the system.
The spray from the falls creates an ongoing cloud that soaks the rainforest below and if you time it right, you can see rainbows through the mist.

Named one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, El Ateneo Grand Splendid is located in what originally was the Teatro Gran Splendid (theater) in Buenos Aires on Santa Fe Avenue in Barrio Norte.
The building has had many artistic iterations over the years, starting as a performing arts theater, then becoming a movie theater and now as a bookstore. Throughout each of its lifetimes, the theater has maintained the original details and beauty including caryatids sculpted by Troiano Troiani, rounded balconies, stunning velvet red stage curtains, ornate theater boxes, and original frescoed ceilings painted by Italian artist Nazareno Orlandi - fresco is a type of mural art done on fresh lime plaster.

We’re switching up the style a bit for how these posts look! We’ll be diving into Argentina next week and sharing some of the lesser known foods to eat, places to see, and things to do.
Argentina is the world’s 8th largest country from a land mass perspective and the name comes from the Latin word for silver, argentum. The first documented use of the name is from the Spanish and Portugese conquistadors who ventured to the Río de la Plata (River of Silver) at the beginning of the 16th century.
The country, despite its vast size, is quite cosmopolitan. The capital, Buenos Aires, has beautiful architecture and a bustling social and gastronomic scene. Because of these qualities, it is often compared to the likes of Paris or Athens. The greater Buenos Aires area is home to about ⅓ of the population of the country.
The country’s southern tip is the jumping off point for the majority of travelers visiting Antarctica. It is a 48 hour journey to the Antarctic Peninsula that takes you through the Drake passage. We’ll be exploring these details and more in the coming week, so join us here!

Rapa Nui, the indigenous name of Easter Island, was settled in AD 300 by the polynesian Rapa Nui people. The isolated location of the island led to minimal external influence and thus the culture and people were able to develop and flourish. The island was annexed by Chile without the consent of the Rapa Nui people in 1933. The island is inhabited to this day by descendents of the original Rapa Nui, and they have been regularly fighting for cultural autonomy and control over their sacred land.
The island is most well known for its moai that sit atop ahu. The moai are enormous stone figures of which there are over 900 on the island and ahu are the ceremonial platforms of which there are over 300. The moai range in height from 2m to 20m and are made out of explosive lava rock known as lava tuff. They were carved using simple picks and then lowered down the hills into pre-dug holes so they could be placed upright.

With colorful palafitos (stilted houses), a plethora of wooden churches, and an aura of mysticism and solidarity - Chile’s Chiloé island is a must visit.
The majority of the towns on the island lie on the eastern and northern edges laid out between inlets, bays, and peninsulas. The locals have a deep connection to the land and the ocean waters and consider themselves Chilote first and Chilean second.
When you visit, make sure to try chiloe potato and seafood cooked curanto style (a traditional Chilote method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in the ground). And if you hear anyone mention “la minga” while you are in town, make sure to check it out! Minga is the process of “moving,” but unlike what you are picturing, minga literally means to move the entire house structure. The community comes together to move the physical home from its old location to new, sometimes even floating it across the water!

Chile is the longest country in the world at 2650 miles but only 217 miles at its widest point and 40 miles at its narrowest. When it comes to landscapes, Chile has them all - tropical islands, glaciers, urban cities, high plateau deserts, and more.
The diversity of the terrain in Chile is what makes their wines so unique and celebrated. There are 3 main wine regions in the country - Andes, Coastal, and Entre Cordilleras (“between mountains”). Each region's weather conditions, water table, and nutrient rich soil create ideal conditions for grape cultivation.
Let us set up a driver for you to explore the region so you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving. Pro tip: besides the obvious dangers, there is a zero tolerance policy for drinking and driving in Chile and the blood alcohol limit is very low. The police are not flexible if you get pulled over - you will receive a steep fine and possible jail time as well.

Chile’s Marble Cathedrals - with textured walls, sculpted pillars and vaulted ceilings, these caves are one of the most unique systems in the world. The cliffs have been chiseled away over thousands of years by the winds and crashing waves of Lago General Carrera (a lake shared by both Chile and Argentina). The best way to explore them is to hop on board a boat in the town of Puerto Río Tranquilo or if you are a strong kayaker and can handle the choppiness of the lake, then you can join a kayak group.
To see the lake and cathedrals from the outside at their brightest and bluest, it is best to visit during the southern hemisphere summer - December to March, but I recommend visiting during shoulder seasons (spring or fall) when the lake is lower and you can get inside the caves safely to really experience their beauty.
Once you are in the area, I also recommend taking a boat to the nearby San Rafael Glacier or a drive to the Exploradores Glacier, two additional highlights in this region.

Sitting less than an hour outside of downtown La Paz is an area where clay spires dot the landscape. Both Valle de las Ánimas and Valle de la Luna (also called Killa Qhichwa) were created by wind and rain erosion of the clay and sandstone mountains over thousands of years. Because of this makeup and the mineral content of the stalagmite-like formations, you will see a beautiful array of colors from grays and beiges to reds and deep purples.

High in the Andes, sitting at greater than 11,500ft, is the de facto capital of Bolivia, La Paz. Traveling around the city is often done via Mi Teleférico, the aerial cable car system - which was built to help relieve the growing congestion on public transportation, ease traffic, and help with noise and air pollution. The system connects the cities of La Paz, which sits in a canyon on the Choqueyapu River, and El Alto which sits 1400ft higher on the Altiplano plateau. The system is a tourist attraction in its own right, giving people the ability to travel around the city at a bird’s eye view to witness both its expansiveness and the beautiful colors of the buildings built into the hillsides!

Bolivia is home to the largest indigenous population in Latin America with over 36 indigenous cultures totaling over 60% of the population of the country - Aymara and Quechua being the two largest groups. Social movements pushing for increased rights, land, and natural resource protection for the indigenous communities in the 90’s and 2000’s have led to greater governmental representation and protections, but there is still a long way to go.
These movements led to the legal recognition and rights of Bolivia’s indigenous people being written into the country's constitution in 2007 with enforcement starting in 2009. Despite this monumental change in the legal makeup of the country, unauthorized and invasive agriculture, forest fires, and large infrastructure projects continue to put the livelihoods of the local populations at risk and are just a few examples of ongoing battles that the indigenous populations are still fighting.

The Cajamarca region lies in the northern inland area of Peru up to the Ecuadorian border. Some of the first inhabitants of Peru lived in this area and the Otuzco Windows (Las Ventanillas de Otuzco) are one of the more fascinating archaeological sites to visit. The windows were excavated by the Cajamarca people (200AD - 800AD), and were a set of funerary buildings that were likely used as a place of 2nd burial since no complete set of remains have been found. The windows are rectangular or square at the entry point and are 8 - 10 meters deep. Each of the windows or niches meet in a corridor at the center of the rock that then leads to more niches and passageways. The windows sit 8km outside of the city of Cajamarca.
Cajamarca also sits at the crossroads of Incan and colonial Spanish culture. In the city, in 1532, is where the beginning of the end of the Inca empire began. Inca Atahualpa, the last Incan emperor, and Francisco Pizarro along with his Spanish conquistadors, met in November of that year with the Spaniards capturing Atahualpa after he refused Pizarro’s demands. A large ransom, one that would fill El Cuarto del Rescate (the Ransom or Rescue room in Cajamarca) was demanded in exchange for Atahualpa’s life (some say release but that verbiage hasn’t been found in historical writings) and although it was paid, Atualhapa’s life was not spared - he would later be killed in the room which still stands today.

Arequipa, in the south of Peru is flanked by 3 volcanoes and is known for its colonial architecture made from “sillar”, a stunning white volcanic stone. The gastronomic scene is plentiful but you get to know the city best in its picanterías - traditional restaurants where stone mortars and clay pots are used to prepare local specialties including “ocopa”, a potato dish covered in a creamy and spicy black mint huacatay sauce.
The city is also considered the gateway to Colca Canyon. About a 4 hour drive from Arequipa, the canyon is the 2nd deepest in the world at almost 14,000ft (that is almost 2x the depth of the Grand Canyon). It is 60 miles long and is carved out by the Río Colco as it winds towards the Pacific Ocean.
Adventure travel including river rafting, trekking, and mountain biking plus hiking are prominent activities in the area but you can also plan relaxation into this adventure by visiting the thermal pools in Chivay or waking up early to view the flight of the Andean Condor - which is the largest flying bird in the world and a sacred part of Incan culture.

In the northern part of the Andes chain, sits the ruins of Kuelap Fortress - one of the largest ancient monuments in the Americas, and likely one you haven’t heard of! This fortress was built by the Chachapoya people who are also called the “Warriors of the Clouds.”
The Chachapoya people predate the Incas by over 6 centuries but had no written language and thus much of what is known about them comes from archaeological remains which can be incredibly challenging to access given the remoteness of the mountains and the limestone cliffs.
A 3 hour drive north of Kuelap will take you to the Sarcofagos de Karajia, which are pictured in this post. On the cliffside are eight Chachapoyan mummies, which the locals call the “ancient wise men.” The sarcophagi were purposely placed in difficult to access locations as a way to protect their dead.

Machu Picchu is arguably the most famous of the sites in the Sacred Valley of Peru but there are other locations and treks that are also worth your time! We recommend you add the combination of the Moray ruins and Maras salt flats onto your destination lists.
One theory about the agricultural terraces of Moray is that this was were where the Inca people experimented with different microclimates and how to grow in each of them. There are multiple reasons why this is a theory including the following: there are about 500 feet between the highest and lowest terrace, over a 25℉ temperature difference, the sun hits each terrace at different angles and with different strengths, and there is an in irrigation system built into it!
The Maras salt flats are a beautiful multicolored terraced set of flats that are still harvested today. There are over 3000 wells that are filled with salt water by an underground canal system. Over time the sun evaporates the water leaving the salt behind which is then harvested using ancient techniques.

Yasuni is the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon and is considered one of the most biodiverse locations in the world. It is located east of the Andean mountain range and extends to the borders with Colombia and Peru. This area consists of Yasuni National Park, the Waorani Ethnic Reserve, as well as an area called the “Untouchable Zone.” The Untouchable Zone is designated as such to protect Indigenous groups and wildlife from exploitation, both cultural and environmental.
There isn’t a clear answer why Yasuni has such a large amount of biodiversity but it may lie in its strategic location where three unique systems converge - the base of the Andes, close to the equator, and along the Amazon. Much of the area has yet to be studied with the first research station only being established in 1994.
Of what has been researched, it is known that there are over 1300 tree, 400 fish, 170 mammal, 600 bird, and 100,000 insect species in Yasuni! Within these numbers are also over 130 threatened or endangered species and there are at least 3 facing extinction, the giant anteater, harpy eagle, and jaguar.
